71. Graffiti

Graffiti, which comes from the Italian word for “scratched,” dates back before Pompeii, and is a feature of many ancient cultures, including the Greeks and the Egyptians. That’s no excuse. In what is arguably the most beautiful country in the world, it sometimes seems that every square inch is covered with someone’s scrawl. I know there is a desire here to ape American culture and cool, but this goes way beyond that. Why?Is it a rebellion against the natural impulse towards visual perfection?Or is it people’s subconscious urge towards making their own art, making their mark, being the Michelangelo or Leonardo of their time?
